New Children’s Books Collection

Our Library has just received an amazing gift of 100 new children’s books, ranging from pre-kindergarten through early readers. These books were a donation from the Brownstone Book Fund, a private foundation in New York City, interested in fostering early reading, a love of books, and encouraging parents and children to read together.

Celebrating 163 Years

Admission to the Union: Kansas was admitted to the Union as the 34th state on January 29, 1861.

Nickname: Kansas is often referred to as the “Sunflower State.”

State Capital: Topeka is the capital city of Kansas.

State Motto: The state motto of Kansas is “Ad Astra per Aspera,” which is Latin for “To the Stars through Difficulties.”

Geography: Kansas is known for its vast prairies, and it is often considered a part of the Great Plains region in the United States.

Flint Hills: The Flint Hills, located in eastern Kansas, are known for their scenic beauty and are one of the last preserves of tallgrass prairie in the country.

Famous Landmarks: Notable landmarks in Kansas include the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.

Abolitionist History: Kansas played a significant role in the struggle against slavery during the Bleeding Kansas era, a period of violent conflicts over the issue of slavery leading up to the Civil War.

Tornado Alley: Kansas is part of the region known as Tornado Alley due to its susceptibility to tornadoes.

Agriculture: The state is a major agricultural producer, particularly known for its wheat production.
